Methacrylated Gellan Gum (GGMA)
Description
Gellan gum is an anionic microbial polysaccharide composed of β‑1,3‑D‑glucose, β‑1,4‑D‑glucuronic acid, and α‑1,4‑L‑rhamnose in a molar ratio of 2:1:1. It exhibits pronounced thermoreversible gelation behavior, forming hydrogels at low concentrations (e.g., 1%). Below 35 °C, gellan gum adopts a double‑helix structure, while at elevated temperatures (above 70 °C) it transitions into a random‑coil conformation.
GGMA is obtained by introducing methacryloyl (MA) groups onto the gellan gum backbone. This modification preserves the natural thermosensitivity of gellan gum while adding photocrosslinking capability. In the presence of a photoinitiator, GGMA can be rapidly cured under UV or visible light to form hydrogels. Compared with traditional thermosensitive gellan gum gels, GGMA hydrogels exhibit significantly enhanced structural stability and mechanical strength, making them highly suitable for advanced applications such as 3D cell culture, tissue‑engineering scaffold fabrication, and bio‑3D printing.
