Methacrylated Chondroitin Sulfate (CSMA) is a photocrosslinkable glycosaminoglycan engineered for advanced hydrogel fabrication in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Derived from naturally occurring chondroitin sulfate—known for its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and intrinsic antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and immunomodulatory activities—CSMA introduces methacryloyl groups that enable rapid and controllable light‑induced crosslinking. This modification allows CSMA to form stable, bioactive hydrogels suitable for in situ gelation, 3D bioprinting, and the construction of complex biomedical structures, making it a powerful platform for cartilage repair, wound healing, neural regeneration, and drug‑delivery applications.

Description

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a naturally occurring sulfated glycosaminoglycan widely found in connective tissues such as cartilage, skin, ligaments, and tendons. Composed of repeating units of glucuronic acid and N‑acetylgalactosamine, CS exhibits excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability, along with multiple biological activities including antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. It has been extensively applied in osteoarthritis treatment, wound healing, nerve repair, cardiovascular therapies, and drug‑delivery systems.

CSMA is a photocrosslinkable, methacrylated derivative of chondroitin sulfate, engineered by introducing methacryloyl (MA) groups onto the CS backbone. This modification preserves the natural bioactivity of CS while adding light‑responsive crosslinking capability. CSMA enables rapid and controllable hydrogel formation, supporting in situ gelation and the fabrication of complex 3D structures. These features make CSMA a powerful material platform for tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and advanced hydrogel‑based biomedical research.
