Methacrylated Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVAMA)
Description
Methacrylated polyvinyl alcohol (PVAMA) is a water‑soluble polymer derivative synthesized by grafting methacrylate groups onto the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) backbone. This material combines the biocompatibility and chemical versatility of PVA with the photocrosslinking capability of methacrylate functionalities, giving PVAMA broad application potential in biomedical engineering, soft materials, and flexible sensing technologies.
Material Features
• Photocrosslinkable: The methacrylate groups in PVAMA undergo polymerization under UV or visible light, forming a three‑dimensional hydrogel network. The gelation process is rapid and occurs under mild conditions (e.g., room temperature).
• High Biocompatibility: Owing to the inherent properties of PVA, PVAMA hydrogels are non‑toxic to cells and resist protein adsorption, making them suitable for in vivo applications such as ocular implants.
• Tunable Mechanical Properties: By adjusting the degree of methacrylation (substitution) or blending with other polymers—such as GelMA or chondroitin sulfate methacrylate (CSMA)—the swelling behavior, mechanical strength, and degradability of the hydrogel can be precisely controlled.
• High Transparency and Drug‑Loading Capacity: The hydrogel exhibits excellent optical transparency (up to 93%) and can achieve enhanced drug encapsulation and sustained release through the incorporation of carriers such as β‑cyclodextrin.
