Methacrylated Chitosan (ChMA)
Description
Chitosan is a naturally occurring amino‑polysaccharide derived from marine organisms and is well known for its excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostatic activity, and antimicrobial properties. It has been approved as a safe medical material by both the U.S. FDA and China’s NMPA. Owing to its abundant hydroxyl and amino groups, chitosan exhibits pH responsiveness, strong metal‑ion chelation, and high chemical reactivity, making it widely used in hemostatic agents, wound dressings, tissue‑engineering scaffolds, drug‑delivery systems, and biosensors.
ChMA is a photocrosslinkable chitosan derivative obtained by introducing methacryloyl (MA) groups onto the chitosan backbone. This modification combines the inherent biological advantages of chitosan with the processing benefits of light‑induced crosslinking. ChMA enables simple and rapid fabrication of crosslinked chitosan hydrogels with precise spatiotemporal control and in situ gelation. These features significantly expand its potential in biomedical applications, including regenerative medicine, 3D bioprinting, and advanced hydrogel engineering.
