Description
Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a diverse family of phase II metabolic isozymes found in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms. They are renowned for their ability to catalyze the conjugation of the reduced form of glutathione to xenobiotic substrates, facilitating their detoxification. The GST family comprises three main superfamilies: cytosolic, mitochondrial, and microsomal (also known as MAPEG proteins). Soluble GSTs, classified into four main classes—alpha, mu, pi, and theta—are distinguished based on their biochemical, immunologic, and structural properties.
