Description
Granzyme B (GZMB) is one of the serine protease granzymes most commonly found in the granules of natural killer (NK) cells and cytotoxic T cells. These cells secrete granzyme B along with the pore-forming protein perforin to mediate apoptosis in target cells. Granzyme B is also produced by a wide range of non-cytotoxic cells, including basophils, mast cells, and smooth muscle cells. Besides its primary role in inducing apoptosis, granzyme B has several secondary functions. It is involved in inducing inflammation by stimulating cytokine release and plays a role in extracellular matrix remodeling.
