Description
ManNAz, or N-azidoacetylmannosamine, is a chemical compound used in bioorthogonal chemistry and glycobiology. It is a derivative of N-acetylmannosamine (ManNAc), a natural sugar involved in the biosynthesis of sialic acids. ManNAz is particularly valuable for labeling and studying glycoconjugates, as it contains an azide group that can participate in click chemistry reactions.
When introduced into cells, ManNAz is metabolically incorporated into glycoproteins and glycolipids, replacing natural sialic acids with azide-functionalized analogs. This allows researchers to selectively label and visualize glycoconjugates using bioorthogonal reactions, such as copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) or strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC).
ManNAz is widely used in research to study glycosylation, track cellular processes, and investigate the roles of glycoconjugates in health and disease. It is a powerful tool for advancing our understanding of cellular biology and biochemistry.
