Description

LacNAc, or N-acetyllactosamine, is a disaccharide composed of galactose (Gal) and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) linked by a β1,4-glycosidic bond. It is a fundamental building block in glycobiology, commonly found in glycoproteins and glycolipids. LacNAc serves as a precursor for various complex glycans and plays a crucial role in biological recognition processes.

Key Features of LacNAc:

  • Biological Role: LacNAc motifs act as ligands for lectins, such as galectins, which are involved in cell-cell communication, immune response, and apoptosis.

  • Structural Importance: It forms the backbone of many glycan structures, including Lewis antigens, which are associated with blood group determination and cancer biomarkers.

  • Applications: LacNAc is used in research to study glycosylation patterns, develop carbohydrate-based vaccines, and investigate tumor-associated carbohydrate antigens (TACAs).

LacNAc exists in two types:

  1. Type I (Galβ1,3GlcNAc): Found in certain glycoproteins and glycolipids.

  2. Type II (Galβ1,4GlcNAc): More common and widely studied due to its role in complex glycan synthesis.
