Description
Thrombopoietin (THPO), also known as megakaryocyte growth and development factor (MGDF), is a protein encoded by the THPO gene in humans. This glycoprotein hormone is produced by the liver and kidneys and plays a crucial role in regulating platelet production. Thrombopoietin stimulates the production and differentiation of megakaryocytes, the bone marrow cells responsible for generating large numbers of platelets. Megakaryocytopoiesis, the process of cellular development leading to platelet production, depends on thrombopoietin as a vital humoral growth factor for megakaryocyte proliferation, maturation, and subsequent thrombopoiesis.
