Description
Thrombomodulin is an endothelial-specific type I membrane receptor that binds thrombin. This binding activates protein C, which degrades clotting factors Va and VIIIa, thereby reducing thrombin generation. Predominantly expressed on the endothelium, thrombomodulin plays a crucial role in maintaining vascular homeostasis by regulating the coagulation system. Mutations in the thrombomodulin gene can cause thromboembolic disease, also known as inherited thrombophilia.
