Description

Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) is the ninth member of the proprotein convertase family, known for activating other proteins. PCSK9 is ubiquitously expressed across various tissues and cell types. It plays a crucial role in binding to and degrading the receptor for low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles, which typically transport 3,000 to 6,000 fat molecules, including cholesterol, within the extracellular fluid. Recent evidence suggests that PCSK9 is highly expressed in arterial walls, including the endothelium, smooth muscle cells, and macrophages. This localized expression has significant effects on vascular homeostasis and the progression of atherosclerosis.
