Description

Procalcitonin (PCT) serves as a peptide precursor to the hormone calcitonin. Normally, the level of procalcitonin in the bloodstream of healthy individuals remains below the limit of detection (0.01 µg/L) in clinical assays. However, in response to a pro-inflammatory stimulus, particularly of bacterial origin, the level of procalcitonin rises significantly. This elevation in procalcitonin levels between microbial infections and healthy states has rendered it a valuable marker for enhancing the identification of bacterial infections and guiding antibiotic therapy.
