Description
MUC5AC is a large gel-forming glycoprotein that plays a crucial role in the respiratory tract by protecting against infection. It binds to inhaled pathogens, which are then removed through mucociliary clearance. Overproduction of MUC5AC can contribute to diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, increased levels of MUC5AC have also been associated with greater protection against influenza infection.
