Description
Laminins are a family of glycoproteins found in the extracellular matrix of all animals. They are major components of the basal lamina, a layer of the basement membrane that serves as a foundational protein network for most cells and organs. Laminins play a crucial role in the basal lamina, influencing cell differentiation, migration, and adhesion. These heterotrimeric proteins, with a high molecular mass ranging from approximately 400 to 900 kDa, consist of three different chains (α, β, and γ), encoded by five, four, and three paralogous genes in humans, respectively.
The laminin family of glycoproteins is integral to the structural scaffolding in almost every tissue of an organism. They are secreted and incorporated into cell-associated extracellular matrices, essential for the maintenance and survival of tissues. Defective laminins can lead to various conditions, including improper muscle formation resulting in a form of muscular dystrophy, lethal skin blistering disease known as junctional epidermolysis bullosa, and defects in the kidney filter, causing nephrotic syndrome.
