Description
Antithrombin III is a plasma protease inhibitor and a member of the serpin superfamily. This protein inhibits thrombin and other activated serine proteases in the coagulation system, thereby regulating the blood coagulation cascade. It comprises two functional domains: the heparin-binding domain at the N-terminus and the reactive site domain at the C-terminus. The inhibitory activity of antithrombin III is enhanced by the presence of heparin. Numerous mutations in the gene encoding this protein have been identified, many of which cause antithrombin III deficiency, a significant risk factor for thrombosis. Reduced serum levels of antithrombin III are associated with severe cases of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
