Description
Alpha-synuclein is a neuronal protein primarily involved in regulating synaptic vesicle trafficking and subsequent neurotransmitter release. Abundant in the brain, it is also found in smaller amounts in the heart, muscle, and other tissues. Within the brain, alpha-synuclein is predominantly located in the axon terminals of presynaptic neurons, where it interacts with phospholipids and proteins. Its function includes restricting the mobility of synaptic vesicles, thereby modulating synaptic vesicle recycling and attenuating neurotransmitter release.
