Description
GlcNAz, or N-azidoacetylglucosamine, is a derivative of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) commonly used in bioorthogonal chemistry and glycobiology research. This compound contains an azide functional group, which makes it highly versatile for labeling and studying glycoconjugates through click chemistry techniques.
When introduced into cells, GlcNAz is metabolically incorporated into glycoproteins and glycolipids, substituting natural GlcNAc residues with azide-functionalized counterparts. This allows researchers to selectively label and visualize glycoconjugates using reactions such as copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) or strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC).
GlcNAz is widely used in applications such as:
Investigating glycosylation dynamics.
Studying cellular processes and pathways.
Tracking and imaging glycoproteins and glycolipids.
Exploring the roles of glycoconjugates in health and disease.
Its bioorthogonal nature ensures that it does not interfere with native cellular functions, making it an invaluable tool in the study of cell biology and glycobiology.
