Description
Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), also known as Fraction V, is a water-soluble globular protein. The naming convention comes from the original Cohn method, which used cold ethanol precipitation to fractionate serum proteins. BSA is composed of approximately 583 amino acid residues and is a single polypeptide chain without carbohydrates. It has three homologous domains formed by six alpha-helices. BSA can undergo reversible conformational isomerization depending on pH, and its natural structure becomes reactive and flexible when heated. In blood, BSA tightly binds to free fatty acids, forming simple lipoprotein complexes.

Applications
BSA has a wide range of laboratory applications. It is commonly used as a blocking agent in immunological experiments, including ELISA and Western Blot (WB). As a carrier protein, when crosslinked to haptens and other weak antigens, it enhances their immunogenicity in antibody production. BSA is frequently used as a stabilizer in restriction enzyme digestion reactions, preventing enzyme adhesion to tube walls and tips. It is also used in the production processes of biopharmaceuticals or as a nutrient in cell and microbial cultures. Additionally, BSA is used as a standard for protein quantification assays.
