Description

Ac4GalNAz, or N-azidoacetylgalactosamine-tetraacylated, is a chemical reagent widely used in glycobiology and bioorthogonal chemistry. It is a derivative of N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc), a sugar involved in glycosylation processes. Ac4GalNAz is particularly valuable for studying glycoproteins and glycoconjugates.

This compound contains an azide group, which enables it to participate in click chemistry reactions, such as copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) or strain-promoted azide-alkyne cycloaddition (SPAAC). These reactions allow for the selective labeling and visualization of glycoconjugates.

When introduced into cells, Ac4GalNAz is metabolically incorporated into glycoproteins and glycolipids, replacing natural GalNAc with azide-functionalized analogs. This makes it a powerful tool for tracking glycosylation, studying cellular processes, and investigating the roles of glycoconjugates in health and disease.

Ac4GalNAz is cell-permeable and is processed intracellularly. It is typically stored at -20°C and is soluble in solvents like DMSO, DMF, and methanol. Its molecular formula is C₁₆H₂₂N₄O₁₀, with a molecular weight of 430.37 g/mol.
